Welcome to the wiki for EDU 331

I'll give you a user name and password in class to provide you with reader access. Below is a Word Cloud that illustrates many of the topics we will be engaging during the course. Looks like fun, doesn't it?

Congratulations, pioneers! We switched directions in how we do technology beginning with the summer 2008 course.

Teacher candidates in this course will no longer learn how to create traditional web pages and go through the hassle of publishing and figuring out how to make things work with a local server. Instead, we will be using Web 2.0 Social Networking tools to create dynamic pages that will allow for collaboration and innovation. An additional benefit is that the majority of the technical complexity has been removed from the course, allowing us to concentrate on application.

First Day of Class

The first day of class will be devoted to two things:

1.) A brief overview of the philosophy behind the course by viewing selected video clips

2.) Signing each of you up to a variety of free Web 2.0 services that can help you navigate the Web and create effective and fun tech projects.

First Tech Task: Mind Adjustment or "Here comes the future!"

Watch and think about the implications to Education of the following videos:

The Question of Change

Information R/evolution

The Machine is Using Us

An Anthropological Introduction to YouTube (long)

Shift Happens

A Vision of K-12 Students Today

But Watch Out for IOS

Second Tech Task: Social Bookmarking and Images (Optional)

Consider using iGoogle

Set up a Delicious Account

Set up a StockXchg Account

Third Tech Task: PBWorks instead of Web Page

Set up your PBWiki--the front page is your new Home Page

You'll probably want to have some images on your Flickr account

Any you may want to edit those images on your new picnik account--it's free!

We'll want to have:

  • an image
  • an introduction
  • a table
  • an email link
  • and links in your sidebar
  • and we'll want to play a lot

Fifth Tech Task: Web Resources Page

Create a new PBWiki page and title it "Links." After we have discussed this in class, choose the categories you will use for web site links to be accessed by you, your students and your colleagues. This assignment requires a minimum of six categories and 24 links total.

Sixth Tech Task: Your Ed Tech Journal

Begin your Ed Tech Journal (on your PBWiki):

Create a new page on your PBWiki (or create a Blog for this purpose). Name it "Journal."

Create a section (use the horizontal bar) for each technology tool we investigate in class.

Include the following information for each tool: (6 minimum)

  • Name: (e.g., Animoto)
  • Description: (copy and paste if you wish)
  • At least two specific teaching/learning ideas (e.g., "students would . . .")
  • A brief reflection of the strengths and weaknesses associated with using this in the classroom.
  • A link to any application you created using this tool (or embed it into the PBWiki page)

(10%)

Seventh Tech Task (VoiceThread or Mixbook Critical Learning Piece)

Choose EITHER the VoiceThread project OR the Mixbook project.

NOTE:  The VoiceThread or the Mixbook must be embedded into a PBWiki page, not linked to the host site. Also, supporting pieces of the project (e.g., lesson plan, scoring guide, etc.) must also be presented within a PBWiki in their entirety and not presented as links to Word documents. We'll go over all of this in class.
